Man enjoys a symbiotic relationship with many bacteria and most of them reside in the gut to whom we ‘outsource’ many a part of metabolic functions. Any individual who has a rich microbiome is likely to have a better metabolism and stay away from many diseases.
Laura Schaefer, Ph.D., of Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, presented a paper at American Summit of Microbiology 2023 in which she could show that mice who have dry eyes and once gotten rid of good bacteria by giving them antibiotics are later given probiotic bacteria which improved the corneal layer by improving moisture and reducing symptoms of dry eye syndrome. Limosilactobacillus reuteri was the bacteria that was given to the mice to make the study.
Dry eyes also called keratoconjunctivitis sicca is a common condition in which the tears produced by the eye can’t keep the eye adequately lubricated. It can cause eye stinging and burning, inflammation, blurry vision and light sensitivity. It is caused by a variety of reasons. The most common ones are excess screen time, aging(menopause), certain medical conditions like Sjogren’s syndrome, vit A deficiency, contact lens ,etc. It is for sure that a microbiome rich in symbiotic bacteria helps in reducing the symptoms of dry eye syndrome significantly.
Homeopathic medicines also make the immune response of the body stable so that it does not unduly act and make a friendly fire against the useful bacteria. Remedies like Aethusa cynapium, Abrotanum, Nux vomica have been prescribed many a time to keep the microbiome flourishing in keeping the metabolism stable and conditions like dry eye syndrome at bay.
